2017

Download the project handout here.

OVERVIEW

The artist has selected 30 words that reflect the political and cultural moment and attempts to encapsulate it.

In this artwork, funds are raised to pay writers to not use the 30 words in three original published texts engaging political and cultural analysis over one year.

WRITERS

Writers enter a contractual agreement with the artist for one year.
In the agreement writers choose 3 words to keep, agreeing to remove the remaining 27 from their future texts.

Writers are free to write texts with no constraints outside of the project but will not be compensated for those texts.

To be considered, writers must (1) provide samples of previous texts that have included a substantive amount of the listed words or, (2) engagement in topics that are likely to have included the listed words or, (3) send a proposal for (a) new text(s) on topics that would likely include a substantive amount of the listed words with intent and opportunity to publish.

Entering into contractual agreement is at the discretion of both the artist and the writer.

TEXTS

Writers must approve each text by sending a proposal to the artist to confirm qualification and that funds are available to cover payment.

All texts are to deal specifically with political and cultural themes relative to current events and final drafts should be submitted before publication for review.

Once a text reaches publication and meets all contractual obligations, payment is as follows:

$150 for texts 500-2000 words
$250 for texts 2000 words and above
$750 maximum payment per writer for up to 3 texts within 1 year.

All published texts are to include as a citation, footnote or other credit line the following statement:

“This text was commissioned as part of an artwork, 'A STRUCTURAL CRISIS IN AN EMOTIONAL LANDSCAPE', by Kenneth Pietrobono, in which its author, [INSERT NAME OF AUTHOR], agreed, for compensation, to avoid using the following words: [agreement word list].”

OWNERSHIP

Writers retain all intellectual property rights and ownership of their texts.

The artist's contract exists as parallel and subsequent to any other contracts related to the text in question with third parties.

The artist retains ownership of the conceptual artwork and is the sole agent to represent the work.

The artist receives non-exclusive worldwide rights to license texts for future materials as representative of the artwork.
